My name is Alexander, born in 1975, and I’m on the air with the ham radio callsign DB5ALX.
I got into amateur radio in 2022, starting out with the Class E license. What began as curiosity quickly turned into a real passion, and in 2023 I upgraded to the Class A license to have more freedom and possibilities—especially for portable and outdoor operation.
Besides amateur radio, I also enjoy using CB radio, PMR446, and Freenet. Unfortunately, Freenet is a radio service used only in Germany, operating in the 149 MHz frequency range. In addition, I work with Meshtastic, a network-independent mesh network that is ideal for emergency communication in crisis situations.
I live in a city of around 330,000 people called Bielefeld, located in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It’s a great place to escape into nature quickly while still being close to everyday life.

Most of the time you’ll find me operating outdoors: radio in the backpack, antenna wire in the pocket, nature all around. Low power, simple gear, and plenty of fresh air. Whether it’s a field, a forest, or some quiet spot away from everyday life—this is where amateur radio feels just right to me.
Under the name “TheQRPGuy”, I also run a YouTube channel where I share my experiences with QRP, portable, and outdoor radio. The videos are about real-world operating—no studio polish, just honest activations, small victories, and the occasional improvisation.
This website is the perfect complement to that: my online logbook for thoughts, projects, and everything that happens when radio gear meets the great outdoors.
If you enjoy radio, love being outside, and know that you don’t need high power to go far—we’re definitely on the same wavelength.
73 and hope to hear you on the bands!
